• Use a clean small hypodermic syringe with NO needle. Press on to the syringe nozzle, a 3/4 inch long piece of model airplane gas engine fuel tubing. This tubing is available cheaply from your local model hobby shop. It is a pale light blue colored plastic tubing. The MEDIUM size is the right one. The bore (ID) of the tubing is less than 1/16 of an inch. It makes a very tight fit when pushed onto the syringe nozzle.

• Remove the cartridge from the printer, and pull the power plug immediately to prevent any further printer movement.

• Load the syringe with 2-3 CCs of scalding hot water, preferably distilled water available at your grocery store. Then press the other end of the tubing down over the little black nozzle in the bottom of the cartridge holder. It must be a very tight fit.

• Forcibly inject the hot water into the printer. If the clogging is really severe, you may have to press the syringe plunger very hard. Continue injecting until the syringe is empty, while making sure that the tubing does not slip off the syringe or the printer nozzle. Repeat this injection procedure 1-2 more times with more hot water if necessary.

• Once the hot water goes through easily, the clog has been dissolved. It may be necessary to wait 24 hours for the water to evaporate, but in my case it was not. I simply replaced the black ink cartridge, and ran the Epsons head-cleaning utility several times until the black ink started coming through. Running the nozzle-check utility, to make a test pattern print, will let you know when the ink flow is OK.

1. Click the "Start" button on your computer to open the Start menu.
2. Click the "Control Panel" and choose "Classic View" if you are using Windows Vista.
3. Double-click the "Printers and Faxes" icon. This will open up the Control Panel for all of your active printers. Windows will automatically detect any printer, including the Epson Stylus Color 980, as long as it is plugged into your computer and in the "On" position.
4. Right-click the Epson Stylus printer icon to open a drop-down menu with several options.
5. Click the option that says "Properties."
6. Click the tab that says "Color Management."
7. Press the button at the very bottom of the tab that says "Reset Ink Levels." This will break the constant flashing of your error lights and reset the EEPROM chip.

1. Press the power button on the Epson Stylus 980 printer and unplug the computer interface cable from the back of the printer. Disconnect the power cable and wait 10 seconds. Reconnect both cables and power the printer back on.
2. Navigate to the Epson 980 driver downloads website (see Resources). Click the "Printer Driver" link that corresponds to the operating system on your computer. Follow the on-screen instructions to download the latest software driver.
3. Attempt to print a document again to see if the Epson printer is working. Check to see if the document has missing dots or the ink is lighter than it should be. Open the Epson software you installed when you setup the printer.
4. Click "Printer Settings" and then navigate to the "Utility" tab. Click "Head Cleaning" and wait for the Epson Stylus 980 to finish automatically cleaning its print heads.
5. Print another document and check to see if the alignment of the text or image is off center. Return to the "Utility" tab in the Epson softwares window. Click "Print Head Alignment" and then click "OK."
6. Attempt to print another document. Check to see if all of the indicator lights on the printer flash together repeatedly. Contact Epson support if all of the lights are flashing together as your printer has suffered a mechanical failure that will require a repair or replacement.

1. On your keyboard, hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys, then press the Delete key. You see a window like this:
2. Click the E_srcv02 program to highlight it (you may need to scroll down).
3. Click the End Task button to close the program.(If you see a screen confirming the end of the task, click End Task again.)

5. Your printer should now be able to print, but for the best operation, we recommend that you download and install a new version of the EPSON Status Monitor 3 utility from the EPSON web site.

1. Make sure the printer is on. The power light should be on, but not flashing.
2. Lower the output tray, then open the printer cover.
3. Press and hold the ink cartridge replacement button until the print head begins to move. The print head will move to the center (the ink cartridge replacement position) and the power light will begin to flash. Caution: Do not move the print head by hand, as this may damage the printer. Always press the ink replacement button to move it.
4. For each ink cartridge you need to replace, push back the release tab and lift up the ink cartridge clamp as far as it will go (the color cartridge is shown in the example below). The cartridge rises partly out of the cartridge holder. Lift the cartridge out of the printer and dispose of it properly.
5. For each ink cartridge you need to replace, remove the new ink cartridge from its protective bag and then remove only the yellow tape seal from the cartridge. Do not remove the blue portion of the tape seal from the top of the cartridge, do not remove the tape seal from the bottom of the cartridge and do not touch the green IC chip on the side of the cartridge.
6. For each ink cartridge you need to replace, insert the new ink cartridge into its holder. (Caution:
   When you insert an ink cartridge, make sure you align the tabs on the ink cartridge so that they are resting on top of the tabs protruding from the base of the opened ink cartridge clamp. If the ink cartridge tabs are under the ink cartridge clamp tabs (as shown in the color cartridge example below), you could damage the clamp when you try to close it)
7. When you have the tabs properly aligned, close the ink cartridge clamp (or clamps if you replaced both ink cartridges).
8. Press the ink cartridge replacement button again (you dont have to hold it this time). The printer moves the print head and begins charging the ink delivery system. This process takes about one minute to complete. When the ink charging process is finished, the printer returns the print head to its home position on the far right, the power light stops flashing and remains on, and the error light goes out.
9. Close the printer cover.
